Original
30.634*100/ 36= 85.0 ml

Why 85 ml is recommended by Indian Pharmacopoeia for preparation of 1 M HCl?
This question always asked by students and teachers. Because in routine work we need to prepare 1 M HCl solution and we are not able to justify above question.
I have devised exact answer of this problem and answer is so simple
So, Lets start with answer step by step
First we need to know what is Molar Solution
And Answer is Molar solution is a solution prepared by dissolving gram molecular weigh quantity of solute in to 1000 ml solvent whatever solution we will obtain it will have strength 1 Molar denoted by Capital letter M
As example NaOH have Gram Molecular weight 40. If 40 gm NaOH gram molecular weigh quantity of solute in dissolved 1000 ml solvent whatever solution we will obtain it will have strength 1 Molar
If we will apply this to HCl it has gram molecular weight quantity 36.46094 gm but Indian Pharmacopoeia recommends use 85 ml of HCl for preparation of 1 M HCl
I our Laboratory we always have HCl in liquid state and so we need to convert this gm quantity to its liquid quantity (i.e. ml)
This can be converted by using formula Density = Mass/ Volume
HCl has density 1.19 by substituting these quantities in formula we will obtain quantity of HCl to be taken in ml's which is equivalent to its gram quantity
1.19=36.46094/ Volume= 30.634 ml.
Still this quantity is not near to 85 ml
Now further we need to see label on bottle contain HCl and find out the mentioned purity on it
Because HCl supplied in lab have 36 % w/w purity
Means If HCl % purity is 36% we are taking 30.634 ml. We need to calculate if HCl will have 100% purity how much ml's of HCl we should take,
This can be calculated by simple cross multiplication like this
30.634*100/ 36= 85.0 ml
So we have answer of why 85 ml is recommended by Indian Pharmacopoeia for preparation of 1 M HCl and clue is its purity.
